What Are the Five Elements?
At the heart of Traditional Chinese Medicine lies one of the most elegant maps of human experience ever created: the Five Elements, or Five Phases — Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire. Each element corresponds to a season, a set of organs, a quality of energy, and — most importantly for our work together — a whole landscape of emotions, patterns, and ways of being in the world.
Earth holds the need to belong, to nourish and be nourished, the tendency to worry.
Metal holds grief, the capacity to let go, the longing to be seen and valued.
Water holds fear, deep rest, ancestral wisdom, and the will to survive.
Wood holds vision, healthy anger, the courage to grow and change.
Fire holds joy, connection, vulnerability, and the longing for real love.
Most of us have one or two elements that dominate our inner landscape — and one or two that we barely know at all. In this circle, we visit them all.
EFT Tapping — The Tool That Makes It Live
EFT — Emotional Freedom Techniques — is a gentle, evidence-informed practice that combines the ancient wisdom of acupressure with modern understanding of the nervous system. By tapping on specific points on the face and body while naming what is true, we send a calming signal to the amygdala — the brain’s alarm centre — and begin to release what has been stored as stress, fear, or old pain. It is simple enough to learn in minutes. And it can go as deep as you are willing to go.
I have been using EFT with clients for many years, and I never stop being moved by how quickly it works — and how lasting the change can be. I tap myself every day. Even when I tap on behalf of my clients on their issues, I feel it. It lowers cortisol, calms the nervous system, and brings you back to yourself in a way that very few practices can.
In Tap the Elements, we use EFT as a key to unlock each element — not as theory, but as lived experience.
The Seven Sessions
Each session is 90 minutes, held online, and fully recorded so you can return to the tapping sequences whenever you need them.
Session 1 — 30 September · Earth
Coming Home to Yourself
We begin with Earth — the element of centre, nourishment, and belonging. We tap on worry, the need to be needed, over-giving, and the quiet exhaustion of never quite feeling like enough. A grounding, settling opening to our time together.
Session 2 — 7 October · Metal
What Are You Still Holding?
Metal is the element of autumn — of grief, of letting go, of what we carry from the past. We tap on old loss, the places where we never felt truly seen or valued, and the surprising relief of releasing what is ready to go.
Session 3 — 14 October · Water
Fear, Rest and the Wisdom of Winter
Water governs fear, willpower, and the capacity for deep rest. We tap on chronic anxiety, exhaustion, and the frozen places — and begin to touch the still, quiet power that lives underneath the fear.
— One week’s break: 21 October —
Session 4 — 28 October · Wood
Anger, Vision and Moving Forward
Wood is where frustration lives — and where your longing to grow lives too. We tap on blocked energy, rigidity, the inner critic as a Wood pattern, and the courage it takes to move in a new direction.
Session 5 — 4 November · Fire
Joy, Connection and the Longing to Be Seen
Fire is the heart. We tap on the places where we shut down, the fear of real intimacy, the habit of performing connection rather than feeling it — and we open, carefully and gently, toward genuine joy.
Session 6 — 11 November · Your Dominant Element
Tapping Your Own Map
Having moved through all five elements, you now know where your work lives. This session is personal and integrative — we tap specifically on the element that holds the most charge for you right now. You come knowing what you’re there to meet.
Session 7 — 18 November · Integration
The River Always Flows
A closing session and celebration. We revisit the full elemental cycle, explore how the elements speak to each other, and each participant leaves with a personal tapping practice to carry forward — a living tool that moves with the seasons.
What You’ll Take Away
By the end of our seven sessions together, you will have:
A felt, embodied understanding of each of the Five Elements — not just as concepts, but as living energies in your own body and life.
Seven recorded tapping sequences — one for each element plus integration — that you can return to again and again as the seasons turn.
A small, warm community of people who share your language and your curiosity — because healing is always deeper in good company.
A personal tapping practice rooted in the elemental wisdom of TCM, shaped around who you actually are.
This Circle Is For You If
You’ve read A Healing Map or are curious about the Five Elements and want to go deeper than the page.
You’ve heard of EFT and always meant to try it — or you already tap and want to bring more structure and meaning to your practice.
You want to do some inner work this autumn without committing to something heavy or overwhelming.
You’re drawn to a small, intimate online group where real things happen — not a webinar, but a genuine circle.
You simply want to feel better — calmer, clearer, more like yourself — as the year turns toward winter.
No prior experience of EFT tapping or the Five Elements is needed. Everything is guided, step by step.
You know the map. Now let’s feel what it holds.
Something is waiting to shift in you.
You’ve probably heard of the Five Elements. You may have read about them, reflected on them, recognised yourself in them. Perhaps you even know which element is yours — the one that explains so much about how you move through the world, what exhausts you, what lights you up, what keeps pulling you back into the same old patterns.
But knowing the map is not the same as moving through the territory.
This is what Tap the Elements is about: not learning the Five Elements again, but feeling them — in your body, in your nervous system, in the places where something has been quietly waiting to be released. Session by session, element by element, we use EFT tapping to meet what is actually there. And things begin to move.
No prior experience of EFT or the Five Elements is needed. If you can tap your fingers, you can do this.
Your Guide — Irene Nolte
I’ve been working with the Five Elements for over twenty years — first through shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine, then through coaching and EFT tapping, and eventually through writing A Healing Map, which brought this ancient framework to readers who had never encountered it before.
What I love most about the Five Elements is that they are never abstract. The moment you begin to feel Water’s fear in your own chest, or notice Metal’s grief in the tightness of your throat, the map becomes a mirror — and the mirror becomes a doorway.
Tap the Elements grew out of years of facilitating circles, retreats, and individual sessions where I watched people shift something they had been carrying for decades — not through willpower or understanding, but through the simple, radical act of tapping and telling the truth.
I’d love to tap with you this autumn.

A Note on Working Online
The healing doesn’t happen on a screen — it happens in you. What travels through Zoom is not diminished by the distance. If anything, the intimacy of being in your own home, in your own body, in your own space, can make EFT tapping even more accessible and real.
Wherever you are joining from, you are welcome here.
With warmth and a tap on the collarbone,
Irene
